Qualification Overview

The Focus Awards Level 3 Diploma in Combined Beauty Therapy Skills (RQF) is a combination of both level 2 and level 3 qualifications in the beauty therapy industry, the qualification is aimed at those learners who wish to gain knowledge and skills relating to beauty therapy allowing them to complete the qualification without required prior knowledge.

The qualification allows learners to gain the level 3 with our existing knowledge in the beauty therapy industry. The level 3 Diploma in Combined Beauty Therapy skills’ objective is to develop learners’ knowledge and skills and confirm their competence as beauty therapists and will enable learners to expand their scope of technical skills for employment as a beauty therapist. Learners will learn how to plan prepare and deliver level 3 beauty treatments safely and correctly in accordance with health and safety regulations and legislation.

Course Details

Fully Funded for ages 19 and over

Course Length:2 days per week for 18 weeks, 09.15-16.15. Courses run in line with the school academic year and we therefore have breaks for half-terms, Easter, Christmas and the Summer holidays.

Type: Blended learning – classroom based and e-learning; 2 days a week and home study (recommended 10 hours a week)

Develop and maintain effectiveness at work

This unit is about taking responsibility for improving your performance at work and working well with your colleagues so as to make a positive contribution to the overall effectiveness of your salon.

 

Provide manicure treatments

This unit is about providing manicure services to clients. It covers consulting with the client, recognising any contra-indications, preparing for the service and producing a service plan. It also covers filing and buffing the nails, using skin and cuticle treatments, massaging the hand and lower arm and providing a suitable nail finish.

 

Provide pedicure treatments

This unit is about providing pedicure services to clients. It covers consulting with the client, recognising any contraindications, preparing for the service and producing a service plan. It also covers filing the nails, applying skin and cuticle treatments, cleansing and drying the feet, removing excessive hard skin, massaging the foot and lower leg and providing a suitable nail finish.

 

Ensure your own actions reduce risks to health and safety

The unit aims to enable the learner to understand hazards and risks in the workplace, understand their own responsibilities for health and safety in the workplace, be able to evaluate and reduce risks.

 

Provide facial skin care treatment

In this unit you will learn about maintaining and improving facial skin condition using exfoliation, skin warming, comedone extraction, facial massage, mask treatments and facial moisturising products. You will need to maintain effective health, safety and hygiene procedures throughout your work.

 

Enhance the appearance of eyebrows and eyelashes

This unit is about providing eyelash and eyebrow treatments. It covers the use of a variety of consultation techniques to establish the treatment and outcomes required by the client. You will need to be able to provide eyebrow shaping and artificial lash treatments using a variety of work techniques. You will also need to be able to tint eyebrows and lashes for clients with different colouring characteristics (i.e. fair, red, dark and white).

 

Provide body massage

This unit is about the skills involved in providing body massage treatments. You will learn about the classical Swedish massage movements and will be required to adapt massage techniques to suit individual client needs. You will also learn about health, safety, hygiene and client care.

 

Carry out waxing services

This unit is about removing hair using waxing techniques. The areas to be treated include the eyebrows, face, legs, underarm and the bikini line. You will need to be able to consult with the client, prepare and plan for the treatment. You will also need to provide aftercare advice to the client, particularly around the avoidance of certain activities and the use of home care products.

 

Provide threading services

This unit is about removing hair from areas of the face using a variety of threading techniques. It will also include shaping and maintenance of different eyebrow shapes. You will need to be able to consult with the client, prepare for the threading service and produce a service plan. You will also need to provide service advice to the client including future service needs and home care advice.

 

Monitor and maintain health and safety practice in the salon

Through this unit you will develop your skills in a supervisory role focusing on health and safety within your salon. You will recognise salon hazards, carry out risk assessments and then implement the necessary actions. You will monitor and support your colleagues to ensure your salon complies with health and safety requirements. You will implement and supervise salon procedures for all aspects of salon safety and security including the need for insurance.

 

Promote products and services to clients in a salon

Through this unit you will develop a sound knowledge of the products and services offered in your salon. You will learn how to promote these products and services by providing accurate information, describing the benefits and features to your clients, being able to identify buying signals, secure an agreement and close a sale.

 

Apply Make-up

This unit is about providing make-up services for a variety of occasions, including day, evening and special occasions. You will need to show you can work with a variety of skin types and conditions. The qualification covers the application of a wide range of make-up products to different skin tones and age groups.

 

Carry out massage using pre-blended aromatherapy oils

This unit is about preparing clients for and delivering massages using pre-blended aromatherapy oils. The ability to adapt the use of pre-blended oils and massage techniques to suit individual client’s needs is very important.

 

Provide Indian head massage

This unit is about the skills involved in providing Indian head massage treatment. The ability to adapt massage techniques to suit individual client needs and the environment in which the massage takes place are crucial requirements. The ability to perform Indian head massages with and without the use of oils is also required.

 

Apply individual permanent lashes

This unit provides a comprehensive introduction to the art of applying semi-permanent eyelash extensions. Lash extensions are synthetic individual lashes which are applied to the natural lashes using an adhesive, to add volume and length to the natural lashes.

 

Provide self-tanning

This unit is about developing the practical skills of learners to provide self-tanning services to specific areas of the body. Learners will acquire the knowledge of manual spray tanning treatments.

 

Provide UV tanning

This unit is about providing learners with the knowledge and understanding to provide UV tanning treatments to their clients in an appropriate setting.

 

Useful Information

This qualification is based on the beauty therapy National Occupational Standards (NOS) and is recognised by the UK’s leading professional association, the British Association of Beauty Therapy and Cosmetology (BABTAC) as being fit for purpose for preparing you for a career as a beauty therapist. Holders of this qualification are eligible to become a professional member of BABTAC and the course is acccredited by Focus Awards.

 

This qualification will prepare you for employment as a beauty therapist. You will also be eligible to join a professional association and gain insurance as a beauty therapist. Career opportunities as abeauty therapist exist in a variety of contexts, including:

  • Working in a commercial salon
  • Working in a retail concession stand
  • Working independently/self-employed/mobile/home-based settings
 

Once learners have achieved the Focus Awards Level 3 Diploma in Combined Beauty Therapy they may progress on to other qualifications at Level 3 and 4, for example:
