Qualification Overview

The aim of this qualification is to train learners to a professionally competent level, enabling them to prescribe, plan and deliver safe and effective exercise programmes developing their skills knowledge to pursue a career in personal training.

The qualification has been developed for:

  • Individuals (aged 19+) wishing to pursue a career in the health and fitness sector as gym-based fitness instructors and personal trainers
  • Individuals considering a career in a gym-based environment such as a health club or leisure centre
  • Individuals already working in the active leisure sector wishing to enhance their career progression opportunities

Course Details

Course Length: 16 hours a week which is delivered over a combination of evenings and weekends for 10 weeks. Courses run in line with the school academic year and we therefore have breaks for half-terms, Easter, Christmas and the Summer holidays.

Type: Blended learning – Gym based and e-learning; 2 days a week and home study (recommended 10 hours a week)

Entry Requirements

Ages 19+

This qualification is open to all and no previous experience or qualifications are required, therefore there are no specific pre-requisite qualifications but some experience of gym-based exercise, including free weights, is highly recommended. The course requires physical exertion and individual participation is essential, therefore a degree of physical fitness is necessary.

There is also an element of communication (discussing, presenting, reading and writing) involved, so learners should have basic skills in these areas.

Level 3 Diploma

Qualification Structure

This qualification comprises of ten mandatory units

Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing in Plymouth:

  • Anatomy and physiology for exercise
  • Know how to support clients who take part in exercise and physical activity
  • Health, safety and welfare in a fitness environment
  • Principles of exercise, fitness and health
  • Planning gym-based exercise
  • Instructing gym-based exercise

Level 3 Diploma in Personal Training in Plymouth:

  • Anatomy and physiology for exercise and health
  • Applying the principles of nutrition to a physical activity programme
  • Programming personal training with clients
  • Delivering personal training sessions

Useful Information

Focus Awards is an awarding organisation recognised and regulated by Ofqual.


This qualification will prepare you for employment as a personal trainer. You will be eligible to join a professional association and gain insurance as a personal trainer. Career opportunities as a personal trainer are varied, but include:

  • Permanent member of a gym’s staff
  • Self employed personal trainer working with a gym using their client database
  • Self employed personal trainer with own client database.

Learners can progress onto qualifications in related sectors, like Sports Massage, where they will be provided with the knowledge and skills to practice sports massage alongside personal training in the health club environment or their own business.

Alternatively, learners may broaden their knowledge and skills by progressing onto qualifications mapping to additional branches of the Level 3 Standards, such as Exercise Referral and Leisure Management. The qualification will provide knowledge and practical skills to enhance provision alongside other academic courses such as: National Diploma in Sports Studies, A-level PE and HND in Sport and Leisure
