Qualification Overview

1 training course that gives you 3 qualifications and provides the skills and knowledge to perform 3 treatments: Gel Polish, Spray Tanning and Wax Depilation.

The Level 1 Gel Polish and Spray Tanning qualification and the Level 2 Award in Wax Depilation (VTCT) will cover the following elements in relation to each of the 3 treatments included in this course:

  • Client consultation
  • Health and safety considerations
  • A+P of the relevant area of the body (skin and nails)
  • Contraindications and Contra-actions
  • Preparation of client, area and equipment
  • Products, tools and equipment required
  • Application techniques
  • Removal (gel polish)
  • Aftercare

The VTCT Level 2 Award in Wax Depilation (VTCT) is split into the following 3 units:

  • Client care and communication in beauty-related industries
  • Follow health and safety practice in the salon
  • Remove hair using waxing techniques

The course covers the use of hot and warm wax for the removal of hair from the eyebrows, underarms, upper lip, chin, half and full leg and bikini line.

Course Details

Funded for employed or self-employed individuals over the age of 16

Course Length: 1 day per week for 6 weeks, 09.15-16.15.

Type: Blended learning – classroom based 1 days a week and home study (recommended 10 hours a week)

Entry Requirements

Ages 16+

Applicants will also be required to complete a functional skills test upon enrolment.

Gel Polish

This unit is designed to provide learners with the knowledge and skills to safely apply and remove Gel Polish. Experience performing manicures and pedicures is beneficial however, this unit is suitable for beginners through to experienced nail technicians looking to add to their skills.
 

Spray Tanning

This unit covers the technique for performing a spray tanning treatment. Health and safety guidance is covered as well as contra-actions and contra-indications and aftercare.

 

Monitor and maintain health and safety practice in the salon

Through this unit you will develop your skills in a supervisory role focusing on health and safety within your salon.You will recognise salon hazards, carry out risk assessments and then implement the necessary actions. You will monitor and support your colleagues to ensure your salon complies with  health and safety requirements.  You will implement and supervise salon procedures for all aspects of salon safety and security including the need for insurance.

 

Client care and communication in beauty-related industries

This is a preparation for work unit which is based on capability and knowledge. This unit is about client care and communication in beauty-related industries. You will develop your ability to adapt the provision of client care and your communication skills, to the needs of different clients, as well as learn how to manage client expectations.

 

Remove hair using waxing techniques

This unit is about removing hair using waxing techniques. The areas to be treated include the eyebrows, face, legs, underarm, and bikini line. You will need to be able to consult with the client, and prepare and plan the treatment. You will also need to provide aftercare advice, including the avoidance of certain activities and the use of home care products.

 

Useful Information

This qualification is based on the beauty therapy National Occupational Standards (NOS) and is recognised by the UK’s leading professional association, the British Association of Beauty Therapy and Cosmetology (BABTAC) as being fit for purpose for preparing you for a career as a nail technician. Holders of this qualification are eligible to become a professional member of BABTAC.

 

This qualification will prepare you for employment as a beauty therapist. You will also be eligible to join a professional association and gain insurance as a beauty therapist. Career opportunities as abeauty therapist exist in a variety of contexts, including:

  • Working in a commercial salon
  • Working in a retail concession stand
  • Working independently/self-employed/mobile/home-based settings
 

Once  Learners have achieved the Focus Awards Level 3 Diploma in Nail Technology they may progress on to other qualifications at Level 3 and 4, for example:

  • Level 3 Diploma in Nail Technology
  • Level 3 Diploma in Fashion and Media Make-up
  • Level 3 Diploma in Massage Therapy
  • Level 3 Certificate in Facial Electrical Treatments
  • Level 3 Certificate in Body Treatments
  • Level 4 Diploma in Spa and Salon Management
 

Yes, all courses run in line with the school academic year and we therefore have breaks for half-terms, Easter, Christmas and the Summer holidays.
