Qualification Overview

The VTCT Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Nail Services is a substantial vocational qualification for learners seeking a career as an employed and/or self-employed nail technician. This qualification is based on the nail services National Occupational Standards (NOS) and is recognised by the UK’s leading professional bodies (The British Association of Beauty Therapy and Cosmetology (BABTAC) and the Federation of Holistic Therapists (FHT)) as being fit for purpose for preparing learners for a career as a junior nail technician.

Course Details

Funded for employed or self-employed individuals over the age of 16

Course Length: 2 days per week for 8/9 weeks, 09.30-16.30. Courses run in line with the school academic year and we therefore have breaks for half-terms, Easter, Christmas and the Summer holidays.

Type: Blended learning – classroom based 2 days a week and home study (recommended 10 hours a week)

Entry Requirements

Ages 16+

Applicants will also be required to complete a functional skills test upon enrolment.

Qualification Structure and Units

Apply and maintain nail enhancements to create a natural finish

This unit is about providing services to enhance and maintain nails on the hands and feet, to create a natural finish. It covers consulting with the client to establish their
requirements and recognising any contra-indications that may affect the service. It also covers preparing and applying natural tips and clear overlays in either UV gel,
liquid and powder or wrap systems, and removing nails enhancements.

 

Fulfil salon reception duties

This unit is about the important skills of welcoming and receiving people entering the salon, handling enquiries, making appointments, dealing with client payments and
generally maintaining the reception area. Dealing with people in a polite manner whilst questioning them to find out what they require forms an important part of this unit.

 

Develop and maintain effectiveness at work

This unit is about taking responsibility for improving your performance at work and working well with your colleagues so as to make a positive contribution to the overall
effectiveness of your salon.

 

Carry out nail art services

This unit is about creating nail art designs on the client’s hands and feet. It covers consulting with the client to establish their individual nail art design requirements and recognising any contra-indications that may affect the service. It also covers preparing, applying and finishing the design.

 

Provide manicure services

This unit is about providing manicure services to clients. It covers consulting with the client, recognising any contra-indications, preparing for the service and producing a service plan. It also covers filing and buffing the nails, using skin and cuticle treatments, massaging the hand and lower arm and providing a suitable nail finish.

 

Provide pedicure services

This unit is about providing pedicure services to clients. It covers consulting with the client, recognising any contraindications, preparing for the service and producing a service plan. It also covers filing the nails, applying skin and cuticle treatments, cleansing and drying the feet, removing excessive hard skin, massaging the foot and lower leg and providing a suitable nail finish.

 

Promote additional services or products to customers

Services or products are continually changing in salons to keep up with client’s expectations. By offering new or improved services and products your salon can increase
client satisfaction. Many salons must promote these to be able to survive in a competitive world. It is equally important for salons that are not in competitive environments to encourage their clients to try new services or products.

 

Ensure responsibility for actions to reduce risks to health and safety

This unit is about providing you with the knowledge, understanding and skills to be responsible for health and safety in the workplace. This unit is for everyone at work (whether paid, unpaid, full or part-time). It is about being aware of the main risks in your workplace and knowing how to identify and deal with them.

 

Useful Information

This qualification is based on the beauty therapy National Occupational Standards (NOS) and is recognised by the UK’s leading professional association, the British Association of Beauty Therapy and Cosmetology (BABTAC) as being fit for purpose for preparing you for a career as a nail technician. Holders of this qualification are eligible to become a professional member of BABTAC.

 

This qualification will prepare you for employment as a nail technician. You will also be eligible to join a professional association and gain insurance as a nail technician. Career opportunities as a nail technician exist in a variety of contexts, including:

  • Working in a commercial nail salon
  • Working in a retail concession ‘nail bar’
  • Working independently/self-employed/mobile/home-based settings
 

Once  Learners have achieved the Focus Awards Level 3 Diploma in Nail Technology they may progress on to other qualifications at Level 3 and 4, for example:

  • Level 3 Diploma in Nail Technology
  • Level 3 Diploma in Fashion and Media Make-up – Specification
  • Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Beauty Therapy
  • Level 3 Certificate in Facial Electrical Treatments
  • Level 3 Certificate in Body Treatments
  • Level 4 Diploma in Spa and Salon Management
